Again a most delightful and delicious way to commune with nature.

Our garden at 99 SEM st is blooming and becoming quite lush, when we can keep Bambi from dining on the blossoms. I think I may have actually published some photos of the garden. Both before and after Bambi ate the hostas. Just don't quite know how to place them, but then if I posted more than once every few months!

Our home is getting spruced up for the big bridal brunch. Photos may get posted!

I have decided not to blog about health or dentists. Perhaps it's better dental karma NOT to write about teeth/dentists/periodontists/endodontists.

Tuesday night yoga is ON for tonight, who knows what fruits we'll discover!

namaste

Grace

Memorial Day

The end of May, the beginning of summer. We did not watch a single parade. A beautiful weekend to be sure, with many rides, pony and Harley. Just a sad "holiday" and although we are fortunate not to have lost any military in our immediately family, it has always just seemed somber, melancholy, not a good Parade Holiday.

Do I dare even begin to blog that this latest dental event may in fact, be successful? It started in Feb. After many appointments, drugs, rechecks it is all culminating in yet another root canal. A lovely woman endodontist, who I left with a wish "that I never see you again" may have completed a dental karmic miracle for me. She actually said, "what a pretty root canal you have". We shall see how it all turns out after the crown has been created.

PreK is crazed with end of year activities and assessments. And oh yes, we are moving our classroom back to the ECC center. Chaos reigns supreme.

Wedding plans and shower plans are taking shape! Kristen's graduation is eminent! As is a real job for her. Josh is working two jobs! Patrick's new job with the "un-named" famous corporation appears to be a good fit. Hard to know after just a few weeks, but we are ever optimistic. Kate will be running her "un-named" famous arts and craft store soon. They appreciate a smart, creative, talented employee.

Michael continues to take care of me in all my states of physical and mental health! I am so fortunate, loved and cherished. Perhaps I have redeemed that previous life dental business.

Yoga with Grace continues on Tuesday evenings. She told me, "you must have BEEN a dentist". I humbly apologize to anyone I tortured.

It seems I blog mostly about health, not yoga, but this is the time in my life when health, or lack of it, rules my universe. I was indeed feeling fabulous and restored, rejuvenated and strong. The leaky gut issues were being healed and life looked swell.
Enter the endodontic dentist. It was time for more gum tissue grafting. And it looked as if this time would be a breeze. It hurt like hell, but I did not let them use the dreaded pink packing. (I clothes pinned a sign to my dental bib stating emphatically "NO PACKING") I took the premeds, the post meds, swished and pampered, took extra probiotics to ease the antibiotic onslaught to my gut, and things looked promising. Then the little aches started to creep into my jaw. Then an ocular migraine hit, just to keep me guessing and humble. I put off the inevitable call because I had to run a sped meeting. Well, today I got back into the chair, trying to breathe and not cry. I just knew it would not be pleasant. The assistant took an x-ray because as I suspected, she suspected I might need a root canal. And anyone who knows me, knows that these do not go well. The dentist (not my surgeon, but his young associate) suspected the same thing, but the x-ray looked OK. At this point we are hoping for an infection (this is hopeful??) and I am back on antibiotics and big pills for pain. I go back in five days.
Meanwhile...
The AK/nutritionist had ordered new supplements. They did not arrive.
In two days I have a mammogram scheduled.
I cannot gym, my head will explode.
whine.
Thank goodness I can practice yoga and visualize a resurgence of good health.
I will happily accept any good thoughts.
namaste
G

Leaky Gut

When I told my family that I was diagnosed with "Leaky Gut" Patrick thought it a great name for a heavy metal rock group. odd, very odd.
Now that it has been a little more than two weeks, I can say, with confidence, that I feel good. Not just better, but good, approaching well. Two weeks avoiding dairy, wheat, shell fish (not an issue to begin with) and artificial sweeteners, along with doses of anti microbials and probiotics and an amino acid thrown in for good measure have banished the symptoms that no doctor or blood test or CT scan could manage. Go figure.
Applied Kinesthesiology through the chiropractor's office. Amazing muscle resistance testing and some endocrine system discussion, along with vials of culprits and antidotes lead to the diagnosis and treatment plan. If you Google "leaky gut" you read about it's suspected effects upon children with autism (right up my alley), adhd, and behavior concerns, AND all the symptoms I had. Yes, had, past tense.
The most unusual part of this diet is my inability to say "wheat free" without mispronouncing the word "free"! It's more like "wheat fwee". (Kristen, what's that all about??) There are an amazing number of foods available if you just read labels and research the "earthy crunchy" aisles of the grocery stores. The most difficult food to give up has been cheese. Soy cheese, the preferred substitution, is disgusting and inedible. I do miss the cream in my coffee, but powdered coffee mate takes the place of the cream and splenda, and I will miss icecream in the summer. But in the grand scheme of I feel so much better, I will get past feeling deprived.
ah, life is good.
namaste

New Year....

New Year and new blogger dashboard. Didn't even know I had a dashboard.
In the spirit of change, I have gone ahead and changed to this Google format, not that I had much of a choice, and am resolving to post more in 2007.
First new tidbit is the, I hope, resolution of this long drawn out exhaustion issue. Not weakness, I do body pump classes 3 times per week, yoga classes 2 times per week and ride that pony at least once a week. Tough when you get to the barn, catch him, clean him, tack him up and you are too tired to get on...The traditional medical journey started somewhere last summer around the time I was bitten by the deer fly and ended up in the ER. Nasty stuff. Or, this could have been building for decades, depending on to whom you listen! In November I relented and called the dr. She has ordered every blood test known to modern medicine. I do not have issues with: thyroid, mono, anemia, pernicious anemia, leukemia, or Lyme disease.
I passed them all, even had a CT scan (charming affair) on my adrenal glands to check for tumors and the like. Passed that one, too. 'Hmm", she said, "chronic fatigue is not a very satisfying diagnosis and is one of exclusion", so I have an appt. with an endocrinologist in Feb. (Swell, getting more gum surgery then, too).
A second doctor, covering for mine suggested a lack of 4th stage sleep. I do wake up after dreaming, used to think that was good, remember and analyze the dreams. Apparently it is not a good thing, as it prevents the final recuperative stage. Sleep deprivation.
Meanwhile, a friend suggested I visit with the nutritionist at the chiropractor's office. I spent 90 minutes and we discussed lots of interesting history; joints, ligaments, dental, bone traumas (horse issues/knee dislocations/tmj) and migraines, electromagnetic fields (electric blankets/curling irons/computers) and the air quality of my workplace. oh my. She used a technique of muscle resistance (could I keep my arm still while she pressed on it) using pressure points for the endocrine system and vials of homeopathic food stuffs and bacteria/pollen/mold. oh my.
After this we discussed the fact that I reacted to dairy and wheat and have way too much artificial sweetener in my life. The diagnosis? Leaky Gut syndrome. Google this, it is amazing. I had heard of this in relation to children with autism and adhd. Seems it effects a lot of people and I think I may be one of them.
I will avoid wheat and dairy and artificial sweeteners (she said to just use sugar, it's only 17 calories!) and take some probiotic supplements and amino acids for 6 weeks. It certainly is worth trying. No one else has had any success with diagnosing and/or treating my overwhelming exhaustion and lack of metabolism.
Meanwhile, Tuesday night yoga continues on Yew St. Ah, life is still good.
namaste

Feeling Fallish

It must be the change in the air or the change in the leaves...
or the smell of the forest from the back of my pony or the winding mountain roads from the back of the Harley.
Tuesday night Yogini Yoga has been on hold for a few weeks, with health and/or other life plans curtailing our practice. The most unusual classes have been the children's yoga. Once a month I teach two classes for 4-7 and 8-12 year olds. This is a "drop in" class so I never know who will show or how many. Several have come back for more, and some just need to be entertained. It's always interesting and fast moving. I am pretending my son and his wife are off to college, when in reality they have moved to North Carolina. Although I was aware of this well thought out and prepared for move, it has none the less, been bittersweet. Just plain sad to see them go, fully conscious of the benefits for them, selfishly, I am sad. I miss them both and wish them well. sigh.
And another chapter for my daughter, her final year of grad school, plans to enter the real world of children with disabilities, their treatment plans, and their frightened, sometimes belligerent parents. All mixed up with the joys of planning a wedding. Her dress is almost as beautiful as she is radiant while modeling it. No photos allowed.
Fortunately Michael and I can ride off for adventures together, holding onto each other, closer than ever before.
His work has been crazy. Mine always is crazy, it's what I do. Ever hopeful that the new boss would be capable, not daring to hope for spectacular, but true to her word and would in fact, do her job... ever hopeful.
An awful course of medication for an allergic reaction to a deer fly, (now carrying an epi pen)becomes a reality check. things change...
Buddha says, nothing is certain but change.
So fortunate am I to have my Tuesday night yoginis who practice with such joy. And the first children's workshop at Say Yes to Yoga was great fun. Subbing this month as Baujke travels to Holland for her Mother's 90th b'day. I never went to summer camp as a kid, although there was one week of horse camp at Cherry Oaka when I was 9. Day camp, on Syrocco the wonder horse, aka an old milk wagon nag.

Omega was a wonderful, restorative week of walking and yoga. The campus is a former Jewish boys camp and is now a very yuppie inspired, earthy-crunchy, tree hugging, organic, well oiled machine. People are moved along in a gracious pattern of schedules and programs. The logistics are complicated, luggage delivery alone was a ballet, but there were no glitches along the way. There were options for folk who were not blending and melding with their chosen course of study.

Lee (who had visited one weekend) and I jumped in with both feet and tried lots of classes and entertainment offerings. Some were great, others not, some very funny. We did lots of people watching and speculating on their stories. We laughed a lot, ate a lot (mostly great organic/free range/home grown, with some ice cream thrown in for good measure), and learned a lot. Our teachers, Christopher and Karen were generous in sharing their knowledge and techniques, patient and able to modify and accommodate, and in fact, JOYFUL, and their jokes were funny. It was playful while teaching us how to take care of our joints!

We walked like puppies while making horse lips - odd, very odd.
We walked miles on the country roads and tromped through the woods.

The anatomy lessons were great, the Thai massage wondrous, the double wide, double mats moving quilt concept was comfy and non-restrictive. And when they finally found the air-conditioner switch, life was cooler.

Wild life abounds at Omega, deer, birds, wood chucks, and rabbits all visited us and showed no fear. Must be the good karmic energy.

I would go back, I would pack more changes of clothing, I would try more optional classes and unusual foods. I would buy more books, CDs, funky clothes.

It was a great reunion with Lee, my fellow yoga-bootcamp survivor. I met fascinating people, only one grumpy, mean spirit, who had professional issues. Had fun with three old soul funky nuns, met a contortionist and her husband the trapeze artist, and Kia the intuit, who I thought at first was Inuit as in Eskimo - long story.

My first week of real sleep away summer camp was a great success. Just made a lot of laundry!

Namaste
Grace

Into the woods...

I am hopeful for a restorative week of yoga/walking. For a week of walking/yoga and meditation in the woods of Rheinbeck, NY. Am I walking? No, but I have had a fabulous week of Yoga. Saturday morning (very early) I taught a class of women I had never met, an odd feeling for a small town girl. Again, the Say Yes to Yoga studio is such a wonderfully mellow setting, even at 7 AM on a Saturday. I also taught the Sunday class with some familiar faces. It was a lovely surprise when a Tuesday night yogini, miss Debbie showed to take the class. She had met and taken classes with Baujke at the Wellness Works Studio in Worcester. She also felt the good karmic vibes in Webstah'. Last night was a salute to the full Buck/Hay and Thunder moon. We were hot hot hot, but had a great session and nice re-connecting visit. Miss Maureen was lost in some ..."ville" somewhere. A happy place, she was full of giggles when she called to say she could not make it.
I do so enjoy our practice, thank you all for honoring me with your participation.
namaste
Grace

The Garden

Today I spent a few hours in the gardens. Tending, weeding, fluffing, spraying, admiring... Michael did the edging, an enormous undertaking and hot heavy work. The whole picture is quite lovely, splashes of color, many different heights and textures and scents. We had lunch on the porch in the new rockers, overlooking the pleasant view. ahhh
Carol sent me a fitting forward...
THE SEED
> An emperor in the Far East was growing old and knew it was time to choose his successor. Instead of choosing one of his assistants or his children, he decided to do something different. He called young people in the kingdom together one day. He said, "It is time for me to step down and choose the next emperor. I have decided to choose one of you. "The children were shocked, but the emperor continued. "I am going to give each one of you a seed today - one very special seed. I want you to plant the seed, water it, and come back here one year from today with what you have grown from this one seed. I will then judge the plants that you bring, and the one I choose will be the next emperor." One boy, named Ling, was there that day and he, like the others, received a seed. He went home and excitedly, told his mother the story. She helped him get a pot and planting soil, and he planted the seed and watered it, carefully. Everyday, he would water it and watch to see if it had grown. After about three weeks, some of the other youths began to talk about their seeds and the plants that were beginning to grow. Ling kept checking his seed, but nothing ever grew. Three weeks, four weeks, five weeks went by. Still nothing. By now, others were talking about their plants, but Ling didn't have a plant and he felt like a failure. Six months went by--still nothing in Ling's pot. He just knew he had killed his seed. Everyone else had trees and tall plants, but he had nothing. Ling didn't say anything to his friends, however. He just kept waiting for his seed to grow. A year finally went by and all the youths of the kingdom brought their plants to the emperor for inspection. Ling told his mother that he wasn't going to take an empty pot. But his mother asked him to be honest about what happened. Ling felt sick at his stomach, but he knew his mother was right. He took his empty pot to the palace. When Ling arrived, he was amazed at the variety of plants grown by the other youths. They were beautiful--in all shapes and sizes. Ling put his empty pot on the floor and many of the other children laughed at him. A few felt sorry for him and just said, "Hey, nice try." When the emperor arrived, he surveyed the room and greeted the young people. Ling just tried to hide in the back. "My, what great plants, trees, and flowers you have grown," said the emperor. "Today one of you will be appointed the next emperor." All of a sudden, the emperor spotted Ling at the back of the room with his empty pot. He ordered his guards to bring him to the front. Ling was terrified. He thought, "The emperor knows I'm a failure! Maybe he will have me killed!" When Ling got to the front, the Emperor asked his name. "My name is Ling," he replied. All the kids were laughing and making fun of him. The emperor asked everyone to quiet down. He looked at Ling, and then announced to the crowd, "Behold your new emperor! His name is Ling!" Ling couldn't believe it. Ling couldn't even grow his seed. How could he be the new emperor? Then the emperor said, "One year ago today, I gave everyone here a seed. I told you to take the seed, plant it, water it, and bring it back to me today. But I gave you all boiled seeds that would not grow. All of you, except Ling, have brought me trees and plants and flowers. When you found that the seed would not grow, you substituted another seed for the one I gave you. Ling was the only one with the courage and honesty to bring me a pot with my seed in it. Therefore, he is the one who will be the new emperor!"
If you plant honesty, you will reap trust.
If you plant goodness, you will reap friends.
If you plant humility, you will reap greatness.
If you plant perseverance, you will reap victory.
If you plant consideration, you will reap harmony.
If you plant hard work, you will reap success.
If you plant forgiveness, you will reap reconciliation.
If you plant faith, you will reap miracles.
So let us be careful about what we plant now; it will determine what we will reap tomorrow. The seeds we now scatter will make life worse or better for us or for the ones who will come after us. Someday we will enjoy the fruits or will pay for the choices we make.

Karma in the garden...
breave and breave
namaste
Grace

Spa Day

It was almost as fulfilling as a yoga class. Because of schedules and the alignment of the stars, we postponed last and next, Tuesdays' classes. Instead, the ladies of the Trailer Park, aka Preschool in the portable classrooms, indulged ourselves with great company, great conversation, amazing food choices (some healthy), a visit from Darlene the MaryKay wonderwoman, hot paraffin hand treatments, and massages. Our massage therapist Barbara, just back to work from taking care of family health issues, created magic for our muscles. Hmmm, she said all of the teachers had residual shoulder tension...end of year stress?? The woman is amazing in her insight as to who needs what where, and how much! ahhh.
Obviously I am still learning (sped-oga) how to add pictures... but as a side note, the strawberries in a previous post were home grown by my daughter in law Kate! I brought my own cd's (even though the OM didn't work!) so I wouldn't be surprised by unknown incantations or funky musical interludes. Her studio is clean, so well organized, and stocked with props. I have taken classes in other studios that were dusty, messy, unorganized...
Baujke's studio has an aire of sacred space. There were 10 students, two brand new and the rest I knew from class. All were gracious and accepting of a new face in the teacher space. I used the lesson from last Tues night. It having had rave reviews from the ladies. It had rave reviews again today. Lots of ocean themes and gentle twists. (I DID NOT however share the Tom Brady story). The after class critiques were supportive and generous. One young lady is brining her mom to the next class I sub because I break the instructions into little steps... hmm, special needs preschool teacher...
All in all a lovely way to start the day.
namaste
G

Full Strawberry Moon

The ladies of the Tues. night class have all agreed with miss Deb's suggestion that we honor the moon with a Supportive Yoga class.
